Overview

A nineteenth-century rope works restored as 34 lofts and apartments, with a new timber wing facing the river.

The Ropery takes the long brick sheds of the old Ropewalk works and turns them into homes without hiding what they were. The original columns, roof trusses and cast-iron windows stay. Between them sit 34 lofts and apartments, a residents’ workshop and a garden court that opens onto the river walk.

What’s changing

The 1950s extension on the river side comes down and is replaced by a new timber wing of studios and two-bedroom apartments. It’s lower than the building it replaces, so the court gets more sun and the original roofline reads clearly from the water.

Progress

Strip-out is complete, the roof has been repaired and the new wing’s timber frame is going up. Show apartments are planned for early 2027.

Architectural concept

Keep the long view. The building was designed around a 220-metre walk where rope was laid out and twisted, so the new layout keeps that length legible: a single internal street runs the full length of the building, with homes opening off it like the bays of the old works.
