Ropewalk Quarter
Rope works and wharves, turned to studios and homes.
Ropewalk Quarter grew up along the river when the city still made its own rigging. The long, narrow sheds that gave it its name are now studios, workshops and homes, and the wharf edge has become a walk that runs the length of the quarter.

Living here
Life here is organised around the river. Mornings start early on the towpath, the Saturday market sets up beneath the old crane, and most of what you need is a short walk from the water.
A working quarter, still
Not everything has been converted. Boatbuilders, a joinery collective and a print studio still trade from the yards behind Tanner Street, which keeps the quarter busy on weekdays and grounded in what it used to be.
Who it suits
Ropewalk suits people who like to walk to work, eat out often and don’t mind a little noise. Homes are mostly lofts and apartments, with a handful of houses on the streets that climb away from the river.

Getting around
You can walk the quarter from end to end. River ferries and city buses stop along the wharf; check each operator’s current timetable before planning a commute.
