Overview
Nine coach houses behind Aldric Square, restored as mews homes with their cobbles and carriage doors intact.
Behind the Georgian houses of Aldric Square ran a service lane of coach houses and stables. By the time we bought them, most had been garages for half a century. We restored nine as homes, keeping the cobbles, the carriage doors and the hay-loft hatches.
Careful restoration
Every brick that could be saved was saved. New work is quiet and reversible: lime mortar, timber windows to the original pattern and roof lights set flush with the slate.
Complete
All nine homes have been sold. The mews remains private, and its residents look after the planters along the lane.
Architectural concept
Change as little as possible, as well as possible. The restoration followed the conservation architects’ survey of every house, so the mews still reads as one terrace.
