Neighbourhood guide

Old Town

Squares, chapels and the city’s oldest streets.

The Old Town is the city’s historic core: Georgian squares, narrow lanes, a cathedral close and a few mews tucked behind the grand houses. Homes here are rare, often listed and full of character.

Living here

Everything is close in the Old Town. Theatres, the covered market and the cathedral close are all a few minutes’ walk apart, and the squares double as gardens for the people who live around them.

Living with history

Many buildings are listed, which shapes what you can change. Restoration takes patience and the right specialists, and we work with conservation architects on most of the homes we bring to market here.

Quiet corners

Step off the main streets and the Old Town turns quiet: mews behind the squares, a walled garden behind the chapter house and lanes that see few cars.

Getting around

The Old Town is best on foot. The rail station sits at its southern edge and parking is limited, so many residents live without a car.
