Neighbourhood guide

The Saltings

Marsh, shingle and wide skies at the edge of the city.

The Saltings is where the city gives way to the estuary: salt marsh, shingle banks and a scatter of low houses facing the water. People come here to slow down, and more and more of them stay.

Living here

Days here follow the tide. The sailing club launches from the hard at high water, the marsh paths open up at low, and the light changes so quickly that most residents end up carrying a camera.

Building with care

The marsh is a protected landscape, so new homes are few and carefully placed. Planning here favours low, timber-clad buildings that sit beneath the skyline rather than above it.

Year-round living

The Saltings is no longer just for summer. Better insulation, wood-burning stoves and a growing café culture mean more people now live here all year.

Getting around

A car or a bicycle is the easiest way to reach the city. A coastal bus serves the village; check seasonal timetables before relying on it.
